"CORBETT IS LAUGHING AT YOU"

We're not surprised by the halfhearted coverage of the hearing on a Bonusgate defendant's  motion for a modified sentence.

We are surprised, however, that the letters written by the jurors who acquitted the defendant of 39 criminal counts continue to be ignored.

We imagine its because the jurors' comments raise inconvenient questions for Gubernatorial Candidate Tom Corbett, and we all know what happens when Corbett faces inconvenient questions.

The 800-pound gorilla in the courtroom: why did Corbett strike deals with the masterminds in order to secure testimony against "such a small part of the issue that he probably should not have been in that courtroom?"

Were you waiting for the Capitol press corps to ask? Silly!

At the risk Corbett will send the goon squad to the secret CasablancaPA bunker (deep in the catacombs under the Capitol), allow us to point out some inconvenient facts.

Long before Corbett struck any deals with the vast majority of his informants, and long before anyone was indicted, one defendant was on record calling Corbett's investigation a "witch hunt." Does anyone underestimate the impression that comment made on the notoriously thin-skinned Corbett eight months before the indictments? Before, in fact, most of the witnesses ever glimpsed a grand jury.

But wait, there's more. (You knew that, didn't you?) Corbett was obsessed with anonymous criticism (which he blamed on one particular defendent) long before he used a sentencing hearing as an excuse to subpoena Twitter for his critics' identities ... long before the defendant was acquitted of 93% of the charges against him .... long before Corbett started publicly attacking the defendant as an anonymous online critic ... and long before anyone agreed to a plea deal. (Really? Yes, really.)

Buried deep within the transcript of Corbett's six-and-an-half-hour deposition in Thomas Kimmett's whistleblower lawsuit is a glimpse into Corbett's long-running obsession with anonymous criticism.

Q: Do you have any idea who operates the e-mail Corbett Is Laughing At You?
A: Oh, I have some ideas, but I'm not going to go into it right now while the trial is going on, but it's one of the defendants (Ha! "I'm not going to say, but I'll just say it." How cagey!)
(snip)
Q: Okay. This e-mail from, I'll just refer to it as Corbett Is Laughing at You for lack of further identification.
A: Um-hum.
Q: [Campaign manger] Brian Nutt got that from Joe Gertis, and then Brian Nutt forwarded it to Kevin Harley, William Ryan, Richard Sheetz and Annmarie Kaiser. Do you know who Richard Sheetz is?
A: Yes.
Q: Who is Richard Sheetz?
A: He's the head of my Criminal Division.
Q: Okay.
A: And I assume he forwarded it because letting us know what's out there concerning the investigation.
Q: He who forwarded it is Brian Nutt.
A: Right.
Q: He's sending it to these people like Bill Ryan, Kevin Harley, Richard Sheetz, Ms. Kaiser who didn't, who weren't paid members of the campaign.
A: No, they were members of the office.
Q: Right. Anyone other than Ms. Kaiser that you know of volunteer on the campaign?
A: Kevin would.
Q: Kevin was a volunteer on the campaign?
A: Kevin was a volunteer. I don't know that Bill really volunteered at all. He might've showed up at events or something. Rick, earlier today you asked me about people contributing. Rick and Bill more than likely contributed to the campaign. I don't know that they really did any volunteer work.
Q: Okay. You said your understanding is that Mr. Nutt would've forwarded this because it had to do with the then on-going investigation.
A: That's right. Somebody really doesn't like me, do they?
Q: I'm betting based on your position it's more than one person out there.
A: Oh, yes. On both sides of the aisle.
Q: Do you have any understanding why Annmarie Kaiser would respond with, "not good?"
So, what we have here is an email conversation among Corbett campaign staff and state OAG staff concerning a criticism of Corbett that was disconcerting enough that at least one staffer labeled it "not good." (Do these really strike you as people who take criticism in stride?) And you have Corbett admitting that he believed the author of this disconcerting criticism was someone whom he prosecuted.

The email in question was widely distributed among legislators, staff and Capitol press in September 2008, weeks before Corbett's pre-election show-hearing, before plea deals were struck. Whatever do you suppose the Corbett campaign team found "not good" about it?

  1. Amazing that Jurors 1 & 2 came up with the exact same wording. Tell me, what sort of conversation did Mr. Walk or his representatives have with those jurors? How much guilt did they lay on to have them write those things?

  2. And why was an email critical of Corbett forwarded to the head of Corbett's Criminal Division? Does Corbett realize this is not Nazi Germany? Maybe someone should interrupt his morning goose stepping and remind him that he lives in the USA.

  3. Why does it bother you, Anonymous 2:59? One of the jurors posted the very same sentiment on Facebook the day that Cott was sentenced. The judge acknowledged the jury asked him for leniency on the day they announced their verdicts. There's no question the jurors were sincere. Why do you have a problem with it?

  4. Pat Meehan (R) and Bryan Lentz (D), the candidates for the 7th congressional district got into a smackdown today. According to press reports Meehan called a press conference in Harrisburg (is that in the 7th district?

    No, but Lentz currently serves in the state house) to announce what he was billing as reasons why Lentz should not be elected. As it turns out he was trying to tie Lentz to the BonusGate scandal.

    Lentz was present, took the podium and rebutted the accusations.

    For those interested in reading some background on Lentz's state house campaign finance information, this past April I researched and wrote up an overview of all of his campaign finance reports for his state house races.

    The PA House Democratic Campaign Committee did provide in-kind donations of staff but the Lentz campaign donated almost as much (or more) back to the PA HDCC.

    Almost all of the other state campaign finance reports, from candidates of both major parties, show similar patterns.

    One interesting note from the press conference called by Pat Meehan, Republican candidate for 7th congressional district.

    Meehan tried to tie Democratic opponent Bryan Lentz to bonusgate. PA2010 reports and has video that shows a reporter asking Meehan a question:

    Asked why Lentz was never accused of wrongdoing by Attorney General Tom Corbett, Meehan said: “I don’t know about that. That’s a good question to ask [Corbett].”

    Now, is he suggesting that Corbett missed something in his investigation or that Corbett purposefully overlooked something?

    Corbett is the Republican candidate for governor and one of his campaign points is his work on bonusgate.

    If other Republican candidates are questioning the thoroughness or accuracy of his investigation, what does that say about his work?

    Either Meehan was not prepared for this question, and it would seem a logical question to ask given what Meehan was saying, or he questions the credibility of Corbett's investigation.

    It doesn't speak well of Meehan's view of Corbett.

  5. The First Of The Gubernatorial ...
    ... campaign filings for June are public.

    Republican Tom Corbett raised $1.4 million between May 4 and June 7, according to records filed with the Department of State.

    With $5.1 million available to spend, Corbett reported expenditures of $1.8 million and had $3.35 million on-hand.

    He also reported in-kind contributions of $245,033. Records show that $1.3 million of Corbett's donations came from people who donated $250 or more.

    We're guessing way more, but haven't seen the full report yet since it alleged does not include donations he asked while in his AG Office. A Criminal Campaign Violation by the way.

    The Kimment Case may shed more light on this development once in court.

  6. "is he suggesting that Corbett missed something in his investigation or that Corbett purposefully overlooked something?"

    It was very obvious that Corbett purposely ignored charging Republican Jane Orie - even after staffers filed complaints about the misuse of legislative staff/computers for campaigns.
    -- was it because an Orie brother works for OAG and Corbett?

    We really need a Federal Special Prosecutor to investigate the Corbett OAG - because we still need to know who tipped off the PA Republicans just in time to replace ALL of their Computers before the bonus investigation - and destroyed evidence.

  7. A two-party system is a pretty thin democracy. Republicrats have hobbled competition.

    But then to cheat further - not only steal from taxpayers - but to further corrupt our democracy when you already have a two-party monopoly - that is a traitor.

    Bye Mikey. I told you so.

  10. What is the reason for Judges thinking they need more money? I was in the jury room for 5 or 6 days, the judge’s job was not that big a deal.
    I think life is not fair. So it does not matter if this seems fair to me or not. THEY have the power; THEY can do whatever they want. Voting is a joke because when someone gets the power they will just screw us over anyway. What happens happens. To hell with them all. THEY have the brains, power, and money and get to do what they want. These people nagging at me to vote are joke. I cannot stop the crooks from robbing me when they get in office, but I can stay out of the bunch of suckers that vote these bastards in.
    So far, 29% of the Supreme Court Of Pennsylvania is now under investigation or being asked to resign, and only .0048% of Legislators have been convicted and .0048% Legislators have been Acquitted and .0097% on deck for a trial and 0% Senators have not even been presented to the Grand Jury, and 0% of Supreme Court Justices either?

  11. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of Corbett’s Henchmen;
    Corbett is trampling out the vintage of freedoms where the grapes of good wine are stored but not Republicans;
    Corbett hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword only against democrats;
    His storm troopers are marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Corbett Storm troopers are marching on.

    I have seen Corbett in the watch cigar smoked fires of a hundred fundraisers circling camps
    They have builder Corbett a campaign altar in the evening dews and damps to praise him;
    I can read the Judges blinded intentional non-righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps;
    Corbett election day is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Corbett Election day is marching on.

    I have read a fiery Castille writ in burnished rows of steel;
    “As ye deal with his Appearance of Contemners Impropriety, so with you his grace shall deal”;
    Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with Veon martyred heel,
    Since the Supreme Court is marching beyond the law.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Since

    God is marching on beyond the law.
    The Righteous has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
    The Righteous is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat;
    Oh, be swift, our souls, to answer Him! be jubilant, our feet;
    Our Republicans are marching on beyond the law.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our

    Republicans are marching on beyond the law
    In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
    With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
    As He died to make men holy, let us live to make the AG and Supreme Court accountable;
    While God is marching on remembering these Republicans on judgment day.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! While

    God is marching on remembering these Republicans on judgment day.
    A Special Prosecutor is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,

    The Special Prosecutor is wisdom to the mighty, He is honor to the brave;
    So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of wrong His slave,
    Our God is marching on regardless of the Tea Party dual face to investigations.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on and will judge Republicans.

    But let us bring forth a Special Prosecutor to catch them first!

  12. Judges File Third Lawsuit Seeking Return Of Pay Raise

    HARRISBURG, Pa. -- A group of seven judges is pursuing the third lawsuit challenging the Legislature's decision last month to rescind pay raises the judges had received in July.

    All three lawsuits argue the General Assembly's action violates a provision of the state constitution that prevents judicial salaries from being cut unless the pay cut applies "generally to all salaried officers of the commonwealth."

    The lawsuit filed Tuesday in Commonwealth and Supreme courts seeks reinstatement of pay raises for about 1,000.

    The plaintiffs are common pleas judges in Centre, Delaware, Beaver, Philadelphia, Allegheny and Montgomery counties, and a Philadelphia municipal judge.

  13. Pennsylvania’s lawmakers, judges and Governor are set to accept an automatic 2.8% pay raise even as the Governor warns of severe state budget cuts because of a $1-$2 billion shortfall and cautions that he doesn’t “want to hear any whining.”

    The pay raise comes as the result of a 1995 law that mandates cost-of-living adjustments. Rank and file legislators base pay goes up to $78,315 (the fourth-highest in the nation), and the Governor’s pay is estimated to increase to $174,956.

    Rendell has suspended executive branch pay raises in the past and may or may not do so this year, but the lawmakers’ attorneys say they “have no right to forgo the raise.” Darned convenient.

    In the meantime, as the salaries for those who create fiscal problems go up, those who have to execute their doomed plans are being warned to expect deep cuts and those who have to pay for them are starting to be warmed up for a “broad-based tax increase.” Raising taxes in a recession. Where have I heard that before?

    “We are going to do everything we can to get through this with as little harm as possible, but I also want to remind people that the cuts are coming, and I don’t want to hear any whining,” Rendell said.

  14. Pelosi asks for donations to fend off potential GOP investigations
    By Eric Zimmermann - 06/23/10 12:48 PM ET

    Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is asking supporters for contributions to help prevent the "subpoenas and investigations" that would result from a GOP majority.

    In a fundraising letter for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Pelosi says if Republicans take back the House, they'll initiate "endless investigations against President Obama" and "bring back the days of Ken Starr and the politics of personal destruction."

    "Remember a Republican-controlled Congress that devoted more time to subpoenas and investigations than to solving our country's problems?"

    Pelosi asks. "There is far too much at stake for our country now to allow it to happen again."

    Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), the ranking member of the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee, has shown himself willing and eager to be a thorn in the side of the Obama administration on everything from the BP oil spill to the Joe Sestak job offer. Few doubt that he would use a chairmanship to ramp up those efforts.
