MAYBE THEY SHOULD TRY READING IT BEFORE SHUTTING IT DOWN

Considering how obsessed Tom Corbett and his minions appear to be with our li'l ol' blog here, it doesn't appear that they (or the people they pay to do their reading for them) have actually read this blog very carefully. (Or they do and have just chosen to lie about it. It's always so hard to figure out whether they're being ignorant or deliberately malicious.)

Set aside the fact that their presentencing report for one of the Bonusgate defendants actually asserts that a defendant they suspect of "maligning the prosecution" should be penalized for this criticism.

Seriously.

But what really chaps our blogger asses is the entirely false claim that the defendant has (they think) used the blog to "defect blame and deny responsibility for his criminal conduct."

We issue a challenge to friend and foe: Find one post on this blog which fits that description.

This blog has a simple mission, which is clearly stated at the top of the page and which we humble contributors take very seriously: exposing the hypocrisy of Tom Corbett.

Yes, we have pointed out that Tom Corbett has failed to investigate numerous instances of conduct identical to the conduct for which he prosecuted Democratic staffers (and one sitting legislator, who was acquitted.)

Yes, we've pointed out that Tom Corbett himself has engaged in practices for which he has prosecuted others.

Yes, we have pointed out that Tom Corbett's failure to investigate House Republicans from the start - despite his repeated claims that he was doing so - resulted in the disappearance of evidence he later whined about. (Despite the fact that he himself okayed the disposal of computers)

Yes, we've accused Tom Corbett of using his office to intimidate critics.

Yes, we have pointed out that Tom Corbett's own staffers exchanged hundreds of phone calls on state time, using state phones, with campaign workers who had no legitimate business with the state.

Yes, we have pointed out that Tom Corbett attacked his primary opponent in 2004 for failing to recuse himself from an investigation involving a campaign supporter, while defiantly refusing to recuse himself from an investigation involving dozens upon dozens of his own campaign supporters.

Yes, we have pointed out the absurdity of Tom Corbett's refusal to indict Bill DeWeese in connection with bonuses, "LCOMM" and the Nader and Romanelli petition challenges.

Yes, we have called attention to the other political cronies who have escaped criminal prosecution due to their close ties to Tom Corbett.

And yes, we have called into question why Tom Corbett's "investigation" of Senate Republicans did not uncover the overt political operation Jane Orie allegedly ran out of her district office.

We're the first to admit, as the Morning Call's John Micek says today, we've "spent the last year or so being a bee in Tom Corbett's bonnet."

But "deflect blame" and "deny responsibility?" Sorry, we've got bigger fish to fry and no one else seems willing to step up to the fire.

  1. Ha! I had no idea who this guy was until I read the story about his asinine attempt to squash freedom of speech because he got his feelings hurt on HuffPo. I love stuff like this. The hypocrisy is mind-boggling. I am 100% supportive of whatever you say about this jackass (barring threats, obviously.) I would like to know where exactly Mr. C got his law degree and how he has managed to get a subpoena in the first place?

I've been threatened with everything from rape to murder (and then having sex with my dead body) to dipping my pets in acid and lighting them on fire to vague warnings to "watch my back" and not once did I even consider notifying authorities or taking legal action. And those are actual threats! The fact that this guy can't handle simple criticism or questions into his record is pathetic.

Hey Tommy, welcome to the internet, where you will live forever as a major tool and joke!

  2. I am an Independent conservative and when I saw Corbett trying to subpoena records on you for criticizing him I got curious. After looking over your blog, I see nothing other than bloggers exercising their right to speech. I wish you all the best in this fight. No matter what side of the isle you are on, attempts to stop speech must be stopped. Tom Corbett is a perfect example of why I do not support establishment republicans.

  3. Fighting corruption is all well and good but why only focus on one man. Pennsylvania has so many corrupt politicians to share the blame. You lose a little credibility when Tom Corbett is your only target. You seem like a Democrat who only cares about Republican corruption and doesn't care much about the abuses pointing in the other direction. Honestly, this is not a criticism only of you. This happens a lot when folks try to expose corruption, they usually focus on someone not aligned with their philosophies and have at it. Usually there is something to be found. I don't know why, but it seems the most ethically challenged are drawn to a political career. But, again, this can be said for both sides. And as long as you concentrate on just one man your blog seems more like a hatchet job rather than an exposé. No matter my opinion though, your right to free speech is guaranteed by the constitution and that cannot be taken away. Tom Corbett had better look in the mirror and access his life a little more thoroughly.

  4. Keep up the good work. It's amazing the way that this guy has abused his position as AG to prosecute political opponents and advance his own career.

It's also amazing to me that the GOP that has spent the last year and a half talking about some imaginary abuse of power by the Obama Administration would choose this guy as their gubernatorial candidate.

I am now officially enthusiastic about Dan Onorato's campaign.

Now that Mr Corbett is exposed to the sunlight we will see him for the poor public servant that he is.
A few weeks ago it was found that he talked to GOP leadership before filing a lawsuit against the new health care bill. Was this done for the citizens of Pa, or for Mr Corbett and the republican party? I think the latter.

You raise the Important Questions about Corbett using his AG office politically target PA Dems.

Misuse of campaign/legislative is wrong for both parties - but it has been obvious in PA -- that Corbett did not go after PA Republicans - like Orie.

  13. Once Brian Nutt (Corbett Campaign Staffer) is under oath he will crack open like a Nut and spill out all the beans!

Corbett Campaign Operation will be exposed on how Corbett used state resources on state time to attack his political critics.

There are staffers’ at the Office of the Attorney General just waiting to be asked the right questions by Investigators and have paper and electronic evidence just waiting to be turned over to a Grand Jury on Corbett and his Prosecutors and Investigators.

Just like in the Jane Orie Case, when she felt safe, her own 15 staffers collected evidence, and turn it all over to real law enforcement. Orie is a Tip of the Iceberg compared to what Corbett’s Boys In the Hood did to others.

This guy is worse than Richard Nixon and he cannot hide from it anymore, his paper trail of campaign contributors operations in violations of the law will be something he cannot erase at a Trial.

From Trail To Trial is coming upon them, they thought they could ruin people, intimidate them, and silence them; they will have to atone for their misdeeds.

  25. I just read the Corbett Depositions in the Comment Case.

He gave many I have no recollections as answers.

It reminded me of how during the Nixon Hearings on Watergate later came to bring charges on those that gave answers as "I Don't Recall, or I Have No Recollections.

Under the law, one can bring charges on those that use that phrase too many times, as a sign of Obstruction of Justice, and many were charged with those types of answers.

Corbett is not above the law and should be investigated if he keeps those kinds of answers.

It clearly shows he is not qualified to be a Governor with such a bad memory or not cooperating in a Trial of looking into misconduct in his office.

Corbett is either Incompetent or part of a cover up, or is lying under oath and that amounts to obstructing justice.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Corbett covered up corruption, fraud, and criminal misconduct in his own office, according to his former Senior Deputy Attorney General.

Corbett's Financial Enforcement Section, which collects hundreds of millions of dollars for various state agencies, has lost millions of dollars because of no-bid deals that gave preferred collection agencies commissions of up to 40 percent to collect payments for which they did little or no work and allowed them to hold onto the money without paying interest, the federal suit alleges.

The suit was filed by Thomas Kimmett, who ran the unit for Corbett and tried unsuccessfully to persuade Corbett to stop the misconduct.

Kimmett alleged other special deals. In one case, a taxpayer who owed $913,000 was given a settlement of $20,000 with no paperwork or backup, he alleged. Kimmett’s case against Corbett is expected to go to trial in August.

Corbett is a Bush appointee and former General Counsel of Waste Management. Need we say any more?

  33. State recommends more than 3 years in prison for Veon co-defendant.

HARRISBURG — The Attorney General's Office is recommending up to three years and eight months in prison for the first defendant in a legislative corruption scandal to face sentencing, and says his anonymous use of a website to criticize prosecutors shows lack of remorse.

Brett Cott, former legislative analyst for ex-Democratic Whip Mike Veon, is scheduled to be sentenced Friday by Dauphin County Judge Richard Lewis.

Cott was convicted with Veon and another aide, Annamarie Perretta-Rosepink, in March. Veon and Rosepink will be sentenced next month.

Cott was convicted of three felonies: theft, conspiracy and conflict of interest for running Veon's political operations on state time with state resources.

In a document filed with the court by Attorney General Tom Corbett, prosecutors claim Cott is a "remorseless, defiant, repeat offender."

Bryan Walk, Cott's lawyer, said this week that Cott has no prior criminal record. He said these types of crimes for a first-time offender typically would result in probation or a prison term of months, not years.

Any prison terms on the three offenses should run concurrently, he said.

Corbett asked Lewis to impose the prison terms consecutively.

Walk said Cott was not convicted of doling out illegal bonuses, which was the heart of the prosecution's case against Veon.

But Corbett is recommending the "aggravated" sentencing range of 18 to 44 months, saying Cott's theft amounted to $50,000 to $100,000.

Corbett notes that Cott regularly used a website called "Casablanca" throughout the legal proceeding, and dedicated it to "exposing the hypocrisy of Tom Corbett."

On the night of his conviction, the memo quotes Cott as telling the media: "That's it? That's the best (Corbett) can do? I hope that helps him get elected governor."

COMPARED TO CORBETT CAMPIAGN CONTRIBUTOR ROBERT ASHER:

While chairman of the Republican State Committee of Pennsylvania Robert Asher was convicted of perjury, racketeering, conspiracy and bribery in connection with a state contract award.

He resigned after the conviction and served one year in federal prison.

The case gained national attention in 1987 when his co-defendant in that case and political ally, Pennsylvania State Treasurer Budd Dwyer, committed suicide on national television just before sentencing.

After initially recruiting Castor to run for the position of Pennsylvania Attorney General, Asher moved to support former United States Attorney Tom Corbett. Castor claimed that this was retaliation for Asher's failed attempt to gain a seat on the board of SEPTA, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. Castor worked to deny Asher the appointment due to a state law which has been used to deny political positions to individuals with felony convictions.

  34. A Pennsylvania man convicted in a notorious corruption case played host to former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani Tom Ridge, Arlen Specter, Bush/Cheney and Tom Corbett.

Bob Asher, a major Pennsylvania Republican player as a national party committeeman, is known for $2,000-a-person events for Republican Candidates.

Asher was convicted in 1986 on charges stemming from a bribery scheme intended to win a $300,000 state government contract.

The case gained national attention when his co-defendant in the case, Pennsylvania state treasurer R. Budd Dwyer, committed suicide at a televised news conference, as Asher went off to prison with objections from the US Attorney
Office on such a light sentence for seriousd crimes and making millions from the CTA Contract.

Asher was sentenced to serve one year in prison considered a slap on the wrist due to his serious crimes and federal convictions of perjury, racketeering, conspiracy and bribery showing no remorse.

"I've worked for former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, Senator Arlen Specter, and all of the rest of the Republicans," Asher noted.

Asher also brags about being the Pennsylvania state finance chair for the Bush-Cheney re-election campaign in 2004.

Asher is chair of one of the largest political fundraising groups in the state, the Pennsylvania Future Fund Political Action Committee.

  35. Brett Cott should not serve one day in Prison for the 3 charges he was convicted from the 42 charges Corbett could not prove to a Jury.

But Corbett is recommending the "aggravated" sentencing range of 18 to 44 months, saying Cott's theft amounted to $50,000 to $100,000.

Hmmmnnnn.....Corbett cannot even add without making a mistake, he claims Cott took $50,000 or $100,000.

This shows Corbett AG Office cannot track or add money with such a large error.

Corbett only got 3 convictions out of 42 charges 0.07% Conviction Rate against Cott.

Corbett is really trying to put Cott in Prison over exercising his free speech rights pointing out how poor Corbett Prosecutors handled the case.

Now look at Robert Asher, Corbett's Campaign Contributor only served 12 months for 4 Federal Convictions of Perjury, Bribery, Racketeering, and Conspiracy of making millions from a CTA Contract.

Corbett's OAG prosecutors along with Corbett can't blast the jury so the only thing they can try and do is call Brett Cott this great large, dreadful, nasty person.

But all Cott did was get Democrats elected over Republicans on the same Political Playing Field.

But Corbett after 3 years has only investigated the Democratic Caucus on Bonusgate not the Republican Senate and Republican House Caucuses on their bonuses, one being Brian Nutt, Corbett Campaign Manager this very day.

On the other hand, Corbett covered up corruption, fraud, and criminal misconduct in his own office, according to his former Senior Deputy Attorney General.

Kimmett alleged in his Federal Lawsuit that Corbett did other special deals.

In one case alone, a taxpayer who owed $913,000 was given a settlement of $20,000 with no paperwork or backup, he alleged. Kimmett’s case against Corbett is expected to go to trial in August.

Yet, poor Corbett cannot even add up Brett Cott so-called theft of what $50,000 to $100,000 and yet Corbett gave away $893,000 in back taxes???

Corbett also is being sued by his former Senior Deputy Attorney General for covering up “illegal and improper conduct” and “outright fraud” in the Attorney General’s Financial Enforcement Section, which collects hundreds of millions of dollars for various state agencies.

The State has lost millions of dollars because of special no-bid deals that gave preferred collection agencies commissions of up to 40 percent to collect payments for which they did little or no work and allowed them to hold onto the money without paying interest, the federal suit alleges.

But Corbett wants to put Cott in Prison for over 3 years?

It has been over 3 years for Corbett to investigate his Republican Senators but so far nothing proven by Corbett on his senate contributors.

Corbett wasted millions and refuses to collect millions and he says he is protecting tax dollars.

So, Brett Cott like Jesus will be sacrificed as a Lamb of Corruption when the real alleged thieves and cover up artists is the Prosecutors’ Pharisee that works at the OAG.

Ok, even Cott will tell you he is no Jesus, but he isn’t close to Robert Asher either that got less than a year for far bigger crimes.

  42. AG Tom Corbett Goes On The Twitter Attack

Most bloggers are familiar with the site Casablancapa.blogspot.com.

In a peculiar twist Philly.com is reporting that AG Tom Corbett has subpoened the identity of two twitter accounts that seem to be related or linked to that website, @bfbarbie and @casablancaPA.

Corbett subpoenaed Twitter, asking that it hand over the “name, address, contact information, creation date, creation Internet Protocol address and any and all log in Internet Protocol address” associated with two Twitter accounts, @bfbarbie and @casablancaPA, which have only 68 and 123 followers, respectively [as of Wednesday night, 124 and 206].

UPDATE: The story has taken a new twist, with the Post-Gazette reporting that Corbett's office believes CasablancaPA is being run by Brett Cott, a former legislative aide just convicted in the unfolding Bonusgate scandal.

In court filings, two assistant attorneys general argue the blog demonstrates that Cott is deflecting blame and denying responsibility for the crimes of which he's been convicted.

They are seeking a longer-than-normal sentence and basing their argument on that.

Corbett spokesman Kevin Harley told Politico that the attorney general didn't issue the subpoena because the Twitter users have been critical of Corbett and said it was issued as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

But he declined to go into further detail.

Meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union has thrown itself into the fray, saying it will move to quash the subpoena if it can't reach a negotiated settlement with Corbett.

And Allegheny County executive Dan Onorato, who will face Corbett in the fall gubernatorial election, has accused him of misusing his office.

From this blogger just an observation.

Isn't there something more pressing than this particular issue facing Pennsylvania? This matter is not a win-win for Corbett.
